Hi:
I'm new in this forum. A customer wants to monitor his exchange servers and I'd like to know if there are metrics of interest other than the ones provided with wmi.
For your help and comments, thanks in advance!

Hi Alex,
Do you know the version of Exchange Server (eg. 2000, 2003, 2007) the customer is using? There are some differences between the metrics and monitoring capabilities between these versions. Having this information will allow us to provide you with the correct answer.
Thanks

Hey Rajib:
Thanks for your reply. They are using Exchange 2007 and we are competing against BMC.
A good metric could be some running executables not shown in wmi or snmp. Say, showing the status of an executable file (e.g. "sendmail.exe"), and scripts to restart a service when it stops unexpectedly.
All your suggestions will be very helpful for this demo (a good oportunity!).
Thanks in advance.
Best regards.
Alex.

Hi Alex,
Traverse can easily perform the task that you have described. Using the WMI monitor, you can verify the availability of various Exchange services. You can also create action profiles that would (for example) send an alert to a system administrator immediately if a service check fails. If the issue persists for 15 minutes, Traverse can then notify a manager. Finally, after 30 minutes of outage, Traverse can run a custom/plug-in script that would restart the service. In fact, an example of such a plug-in is available here (http://community.zyrion.com/showthread.php?t=48).

Hi:
Thanks for your response. Some of the metrics could be the following:
2) AD – User interaction
- AD System health status
o DNS Health
o Directory Replication Health (GPO Synchronization, Test Replication Links)
o File Replication Health (Check NTFRS Status)
o Schema Consistency
o Time Synchronization
- Exchange Server (EX04)
o Internal Message Delivery Health
o External Message Delivery Health
o Storage Health
o Queue Health
o Outlook Web Access Availability
o Replication Health
Of course somo og these metrics could be a combination of some others, but this could be a good start.
Thanks in advance.

HI:
Thanks for your answer. Are those metrics:
e.g.
Microsoft Exchange
Address Book Sessions
Directory Service Sessions
Directory Service Threads
IMC Connections Active
IMC Connections Rejected
IMC Connections Failed...
Are those standard tests obtained using snmp, wmi, etc? or are those a combination?
Thanks.
Alex.

These metrics are automatically discovered and monitored using WMI, which is the built-in management framework available on all Windows servers.
